Hoops for Hope: A Charity Basketball Game with All Star Cast of Forevermore

Last November 8, 2013, we witnessed the destruction brought by the typhoon Yolanda in the Provinces of Leyte and Samar.  Many people lost not only their homes but also their livelihood. Majority of the fishermen lost their fishing instrument and Coconut Farmers lost almost 70 percent of their Coconut trees.   Sixty percent of the houses in the hard hit areas were decimated which left the people without shelter.

In Barangay Butig (an islet), under the Municipality of Salcedo, Eastern Samar the life of the people is still far from “normal condition” as they used to be before the typhoon.  The community is currently rebuilding 44 houses of the 93 household in the Barangay with the help of the Bakhita Canossa Foundation Inc.  The houses are made of concrete, with a floor area of 36 sq. m. The construction took some time because all of the materials are need to be transported by motorized boat in the island of Butig.

The rehabilitation project started last May 2, 2014 and currently in progress. To help us sustain our project, we are organizing a Charity Basketball Game to be held on May 31, 2015 at 5pm to 8pm at Cuneta Astrodome. The game will be played between Yolanda Victims and Canossian Priests against Cast of Forevermore with Enrique Gil and Ms. Liza Soberano. The proceeds will be used for the construction of house in Brgy. Butig, Salcedo, Eastern Samar.

Operation Tulong Samar - Progress Report as of March 17 2014

Date: March 17, 2014

As of March 5, 2014 – March 17, 2014, we were able to make and store 6,996 pieces of hollow blocks (6,837 pieces of 6x16 and 159 pieces of 4x16) and slice 750 slabs of coco lumber  (271 pieces of 2x2; 273 pieces of 2x3; 206 pieces of 2x6). The clearing of the site still continues same thing with the hollow block making.

The workers were divided into following groups:
1.       Clearing Site – those who are in charge with the cleaning, burning and clearing the coconut trees in the construction site. It also includes those who cook for the food of the workers;
2.       Hollow Block Site – those who are in charge in hollow block making;
3.       Transport Site – those who are in charge for the transportation of cement, sand, and other materials from the port of Brgy. Bobon to the port of Brgy. Butig.

For this span of time, we were able to encounter series of problems and difficulties.
1.       There were times that we were able to stop the work because there was no delivery of sand. We do not have our own truck for transporting the materials especially the sand and we just simply depend on the availability of the truck of one producing us the sand. If the truck is not available, there is no delivery of the sand which means, there is no work. For the meantime, we are waiting for the arrival of the truck bought from Manila. It would be a great help for the continuing transport of materials.

2.       Until now, Brgy. Butig still do not have Electricity and we completely depend on the Generator which is so costly because the price of the Gasoline here is so high. From time to time, we go to Guiuan to buy Gasoline for the Generator which is used for making the hollow blocks, welding, and other construction. We also set a period of time to open the Generator for the people – to have free charging of their cell phones, flashlights, and other gadgets. Lately, the weather condition is not good. It was always raining and the wind is so strong. In times like this, we do not have any choice but to stop the work. If this will continue, it will cause delay to the construction.

We have two Masses in a week – every Wednesday evening and Sunday morning. We are also conducting Catechism and Art activities. Every Sunday, we have the Oratorio. We are preparing games for the children and some youth plainly for friendship and fun. These activities are of big help for the people here in order to keep their moral and faith alive. This is also our way of debriefing them since when typhoon Yolanda strike, nobody is conducting debriefing for them which is so important to keep them sane and to overcome the trauma, stress, and fear they experienced during the devastating calamity.

Operation Tulong Samar - Progress Report

Date: February 23, 2014

Bunkhouse was set-upped for the Staff and volunteer (from the Foundation), Relief Goods, Construction Materials and Equipments.

Soil testing was conducted by Engr. Jude Estiva and youth volunteer.

The 20 footer truck van loaded with Relief food and clothing, construction materials and equipments arrived in Tacloban last February 14, 2014. Transportation was made possible by the ten wheeler wing van lend by the Mayor of Salcedo.

February 15, 2014 was the first distribution of relief clothing and food.

As of February 21, 2014, the staff and volunteer was able to produce and set-upped the following

Around 1,200 pcs of concrete hollow blocks.

 Cut 150 pieces trees to coco lumber.

Installed the generator set, water pump and water tank

There was a difficulty in transporting of materials and goods because of the unavailability of the utility truck and boat.

Below is the picture of the boat used to transport the cement and sand from Salcedo to Brgy. Butig. This boat would load an average of 30 bags of cements.

To cut the bigger expense of transporting goods from the island of Brgy. Butig to main land of Salcedo, we made a bigger capacity of boat, and are expected to finish on February 25, 2014.

To be available to save time and energy, the motorcycle with side car was also transported to Brgy. Butig. This will be used to transfer construction materials and goods from the wharf of Brgy. Butig to construction site.
