Summer is more fun in Newland

Summer is the time that the youth and children are waiting for. This is the time where they are free from the four corners of the classroom, the time when they can play outside without thinking of their assignments and projects, the time that they can wake up late without thinking of the school bell. But it remained a dream and a wish for kids who are enrolled in this year’s Summer Youth Activities, because the enrolled students together with the volunteers need to wake up early to attend the eight o’clock class at SPA Youth Center – Newland. In exchange of waking up early, they will learn new things, gain new friends and have a memorable summer.

Summer Youth Activities 2013 lasted for two weeks. This involves children from Grade 3 up to High School level. These children were taught by the fully equipped and trusted Youth Volunteers of the Youth Ministry of San Pablo Apostol Parish. There are four major academic subjects namely, Mathematics, English, Science and Filipino. These subjects were been taught during the morning session of Tuesday and Thursday, while Religion or Catechism were taught during Monday and Friday of the morning session. Aside from learning academics, the children were given the freedom to choose where they want to join on the skills development class. The different skills classes are Dance, Singing, Arts, Theatre Arts and Guitar Lesson. But the most awaited day not only by the students but also for the Teachers is the Sports Day. Sports Day is the day that they can play, have fun and bond with each other. The main event for the sports day is the Water Games, students together with the teachers use water guns and balloons filled with water and make sure the opponents are damp with water. That day was full of fun and joy, everyone go home wet but you can see in their faces the happiness that they had during the sports day.

Every year, students await the Field Trip, but for this year, it’s only a half-day trip at Manila Zoo and at the Children’s Playground at Luneta. The field trip was very memorable not only for the happiness that everyone felt, but also for the problems that they have encountered during and before the said event, especially for the transportation.

Maybe the field trip is the most awaited day for the students, but for the teachers seeing their students marching to the stage and receiving their diplomas during the graduation is the happiest moment during the Summer Youth Activities. This graduation is the fruit of all the hardships and all of their sacrifices, time and effort that the volunteers gave during the Summer Activity.

All the graduated students of the Summer Youth Activity were now one step ahead and ready for the next school year compare to their classmates in their respective schools that are not enrolled on the Summer Youth Activity.

Many ups and downs came through by the Catechists during the preparation and for the SYA proper. Also some of the parents of the catechists have been complaining for the time of going home of their child, this is because the catechists are preparing their lesson plans and visual aids that will be used for tomorrow’s lesson, this only proves the dedication of all the teachers to the children that they are teaching on their respective classes. All of the graduated students and teachers are hoping and wishing for more enjoyment, more friends, and more lessons to be learned for the next year Summer Youth Activity.

Nourishing the Treasures for tomorrows success

Taking the cue from the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year Efren Peñaflorida and his idea Kariton Klasrum, the Oratorio of San Pablo Apostol Parish in Tondo launched “Kariton ni Pablo”, a localized version that has been designated for the out-of-school youth leaving in the depressed areas within the vicinity of the Parish. This said project aims to address basic needs in terms of  education for the out of school youth who are unable to go to schools for formal education, but other children who are enrolled in the different elementary schools are also welcome to be part of this project.

It’s like a dream come true for the Oratorio to finally get underway and start the “Kariton Ni Pablo”, which was planned and brainstorm for several months ago.  The KNP started its way last February. The first targets of this project are the children leaving in HappyLand. It’s a big hit on its debut because almost 80 children from 7 to 11 years old were gathered and participated.

The Kariton ni Pablo group, gathered children and divided them into their respective grade level or by their age.  After this, the volunteers known as “Ate’t Kuya” began the teaching lesson of some of academic subjects, Mathematics, English, Filipino and Science. There were also a story telling and an Animation for the big group were children really enjoyed. The Ate’t Kuya were fascinated and amazed for the intelligence of the children, because on the first place most of the registered participants were out-of-school. It was shown on the faces of the children that they are really happy and excited during the whole program. You can also see through their eyes the thirst for the knowledge that they can learn from the real school that they really wish. Aside from that the volunteers were deeply touched by how the children appreciate their effort and time that they have given.

Bringing the Kariton Ni Pablo as the new project for the Oratorio carries a big responsibility for the Parish Youth Council. Gathering materials like notebooks, books, writing materials, educational toys and building the two karitons had been a big challenge. The KNP group also had a hard time to find and orient volunteers for the said project which is not easy as they think on the first place. The Volunteers, especially the Youth Council together with priest-in-charge took almost half of a year to be fully ready and equipped for the Kariton ni Pablo.

In this time, the Kariton ni Pablo still happens every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month reaching out the children in the Aroma (Smokey Mountain2), Temporary Housing and Happyland. Children who really want to join the Kariton ni Pablo are increasing numerously, also the Ates and Kuyas who are willing to teach and nurture the treasures of our country are also increasing. How Oratorio wish that they can bring this intelligent children to the “real school” that the children are wishing and hoping for and to be able to uphold and achieve their dreams.

Step-up:REVIVE: Benefit Mni-Concert

Although the Christmas was fast approaching, preparations, exams, and busy schedules didn’t stop the youth from Canossian Youth Oratorio to show everyone what they’ve got in a one-night concert event.

Step-Up Revive concert was held last November 30, 2012 at the Bro. Giovanni Zuccolo Novitiate house in Marikina City. With the help of the whole community, this concert was organized and led by the youth to “revive” their spirits by showcasing their talents.

The Canossian Youth Band prepared worship songs that captured the audience’s heart. They also prepared different song and dance numbers all for the enjoyment of the live audience. The night was filled with songs, love and cheers.

One of the highlights of the concert was the performance of our guests, The Teatro Kristiano from Tondo, Manila and the Genesis Choir of the Immaculate Concepcion Parish of Marikina. The two groups both wowed the audience with their stellar performances. But of course the Canossian Youth Choir also gave their hearts out with a beautiful medley that made everyone unleash their sentimental side with the song “Till I Met You” followed by a crazy hip tune “Bukonut” that rocked the whole house and kept the audiences at their feet.

Truly, with the help of beautiful people who’s behind the whole scene and with the power and divine intervention of almighty God, the almost-impossible-concert was made possible!

R.O.C.K. for Christ (Raising Our Canossian Kids for Christ)

Last February 9, 2013, for the celebration of the feast day of Bro. Giovanni Zuccolo, the Marikina Youth Oratorio gathered once again to showcase the hidden talents of the little children of the oratorio. The R.O.C.K. for Christ concert was held in the Bro. Giovanni Zuccolo Novitiate house in Marikina City.
The concert started with a mini fashion show of the children who will perform for the night. The opening song Let’s Get the Party Started was performed by the Canossian Angels started the night with a Bang!! The whole night was filled with songs of love, dance and worship. The little children showcased their individual talents in every song and dance number assigned to them. Each kid had given an equal chance to shine on the concert stage.
One of the highlights for the night was the Role play of the life of Bro. Giovanni Zuccolo. The play showed how Bro. Giovanni devoted his life for the oratorio and also how much he loved the children. It also showed the importance of worship to the Lord. His story served as an inspiration to the audience.
The concert was also blessed with the presence of the Special Children from the Guanella Foundation. They also prepared a dance number with the hit song Oppa Gangnam Style. The audience cheered for them and it heightened their spirits to perform. They inspired the audience that even with their disability they can live their lives happily and all for the glory of God.
Throughout the concert, the parents of the wonderful performers are in full support. And with this kind of support system, the main objective of the concert, which is to boost the confidence of the little children, was achieved.
